My answers to the questions given to me:

  1. Would you rather want the ability to communicate with plants or animals? Plants. The oldest tree in the world is over 4,700 years old. Think of the stories it has.
  2. How do you start your day? With a cup of coffee.
  3. What is your favourite scent? Coffee again! Or my kid’s hair.
  4. What is a piece of furniture you would like to make? Maybe a nice chair. Because chairs can be fckn awesome.
  5. What are you most likely to be famous for? Let it be said that I tried.
  6. What movie title best describes your life? True Grit. Chos! Baka Young Adult.
  7. Explain the story behind one of your scars or tattoos. I have a longish faded scar on one leg. I got it by falling, in the most dramatic fashion, down a flight of stairs.
  8. What’s the most interesting place you have ever been to? Too many, each place has its magic.
  9. What is something you learned last week? I learned about foxing, and how humidity contributes to it. That made me sad. (In Singapore, you can’t escape the humidity.) Also, the sudden loss of someone so young always hits deep even if you don’t know him from Adam.
  10. What is the most memorable gift you’ve ever received? A scrapbook for my birthday from my then-boyfriend, now the Hub.
  11. Do you have a favourite post? Please share it. I wrote about our neighbourhood library.

11 “fun” facts about me:

  • I can wiggle my ears.
  • I’m a fan of Wes Anderson, Edgar Wright, Quentin Tarantino, and Christopher Nolan films. (Hands up who’s watching Tenet this weekend?)
  • I love listening to music a lot too. I sometimes pretend my life has a soundtrack.
  • My favourite Pinoy dish is lengua estofado, favourite Singaporean dish is bak chor mee.
  • I named my kid after one of my favourite video game characters.
  • I like horror. A lot. But I scare easily. 😅
  • My longest celebrity crush is Keanu Reeves. Ever since seeing him in Paula Abdul’s music video for “Rush, Rush.” Ayayay.
  • My top three most re-watched movies are: When Harry Met Sally, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, and Pride & Prejudice (2005 version).
  • I like a lot of authors, but Haruki Murakami, Jeanette Winterson, and Roald Dahl are old favourites.
  • I once “stole” a book from a school library.
  • I’ve been mugged only once in my life — and it was in London (not the Philippines!).

The slam book format is fun, but it was a struggle to get to 11 (not to mention folks might already have answered stuff like this before). So, no pressure, answer the following questions only if you feel like it. 😊

    Gusto ko ‘yung True Grit bilang title that best describes your life! Ang taray! Hahaha. 😀

    Ngayon ko lang natutunan ‘yang foxing. May term pala d’un, haha. Good to know!

    Ano tingin mo sa supposed sexism ng works ni Murakami? Ever since somebody pointed out to me that his female characters are obviously written by a man, clouded na ‘yung perception ko. I still enjoy re-reading most of his short stories but now that I can recognize the sexism, I am sorta kinda disturbed? Haha, labo.

      Nakakalungkot yung sa foxing, last week nagpupunas ako ng bookshelves na-realise ko ang daming libro ko na ganun na. Parang especially humid yata yung condo namin. 😞

      Hmm, good question. What I like about Murakami’s novels is how easily he slides from the ordinary to the surreal and back again. I also like his sparse style (though that probably extends to a few other Japanese writers). I agree, a lot of his female characters seem unrealistic or serve solely to “progress” the male characters. Marami rin unnecessary boobs. Haha. Then there are relatable gems, like the wife in “Sleep” sa The Elephant Vanishes or the way he writes about running. Ang dating tuloy sa akin, the plot in his fictional works sometimes comes at the expense of (usually) the female characters. That doesn’t detract from my appreciation of his writing though. Any discomfort I get when reading his work is not necessarily a bad thing. I ask myself what it is about the piece that bothers me. If I still feel compelled to read on, I ask myself what draws me in. Is he really writing about boobs, or is it about something else? I like that I can engage with his work in that way. Mabagal tuloy ako magbasa. Hehe. 😊

      1. Naks, good take on Murakami! Goes to show that criticism (engaging with the text) is not necessarily the enemy of enjoyment. 🙂

        “Is he really writing about boobs, or is it about something else?” I mean, he could be writing about something else and still propagate dangerous stereotypes about women. Char haha. Pero gets, Murakami definitely knows how to pull the readers in. 😀

        Btw napanood mo na Tenet? How was it? I might watch it in the cinemas next week hehehe.

        1. True, true. Reading is an interactive process, and I like to think (hope?) his readers are worldly enough to recognise when something’s not quite right, hindi fanboy/girl lang. Personally, I first read Murakami at a certain time in my life, so my experience of him has this nostalgia factor blended in too. 😊

          Ay, naloka ako sa Tenet. Haha. I watched it fresh, didn’t read any reviews. After watching it, I checked online to make sure I understood the plot right — I did. Pero I haven’t read a review to date that could explain how the world worked in sufficient detail. I don’t want to spoil it, so let me know what you think about the movie after you catch it and I’ll elaborate hehe.

          1. Same din, may nostalgia factor din si Murakami for me. Na-a-associate ko siya with college, ‘yung time na halos lahat ng bookish people na kakilala ko ay nagbabasa ng Murakami. Haha. 😀

            Huweeeeit, ‘di ko pa rin napapanood! Pero babalikan kita kapag napanood ko na, kailan man ‘yon! 😂

  6. Thank you for participating. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know you, and I appreciate your thoughtful responses, despite having done this questionnaire numerous times.
    I agree; a chair would be lovely to build. There’s no better feeling than having some thing sturdy and strong to hold you.

  7. I’m not yet mugged, but somebody stole my trashcan not in the Philippines but here in Florida. lol.

    I also love coffee scent, but I can’t drink coffee makes me feel really bad. 😦

      1. I know coffee is life! I work night shift that’s why I also want to drink coffee but really my body won’t take it. 😦 oh well they get a clean used trashcan. Also when I used to live in an apartment somewhere in Miami someone stole my blank checks from my mailbox and used it to pay their cable tv! I know it because the details reflected in my checking account lol
